Meet Your Saboteurs
Your mind can be your best friend. And it can be your worst enemy.
The stress, self-doubt, and frustration we feel is a form of self-sabotage that stops us from using our talents and skills to great effect.
It’s not as nefarious as it sounds. Most of the time it’s a byproduct of beliefs and good intentions.
My parents used fear as a way to teach me to be safe, but that also fostered a certain risk averseness.
According to the Positive Intelligence project, there are two parts to the self sabotage that occurs as a result of our mind’s programming.
Your Master Saboteur
This is the guy that is the project manager for your self-sabotage. He makes sure tasks are delegated to the right accomplice saboteur.
Your Accomplice Saboteurs
We interact with some combination of 9 saboteurs, each an expert in their own area. They are:
Avoider
Controller
Hyper-Achiever
Hyper-Rational
Hyper-Vigilant
Pleaser
Once you’re aware of the soft code, you can start to reprogram the mind. This is as simple as recognizing when you’ve been “hooked” by one of these accomplices.
Resist the temptation to judge the feelings as bad and get out of it quickly. You can learn a lot from these triggers.
Some days I get frustrated by the lack of time I have to throw at work. But then I ask, “do I really want to be so busy all the time?” What I really want is to spend less time doing more of the things in my Zone of Genius, and enjoying life.
Be aware, be in control, and stay curious.
